Cabo Rojo enters a new stage and consolidates as the great tourism hub of the Dominican south
The project advances through 2026 with an operating cruise port, hotel and international airport construction, the arrival of private capital and a global investment estimated at more than US$2,200 million.

Cabo Rojo is no longer just a promise of development: it has become one of the most important tourism and infrastructure projects in the Dominican Republic.
Located in the province of Pedernales, the new destination moves forward in 2026 with hotel construction, airport infrastructure, basic services, road connectivity and a cruise port that is already operating and gaining international recognition.
The Cabo Rojo–Pedernales Tourism Development Project was conceived to be executed in four stages over approximately ten years, with a global investment estimated at US$2,245 million.
Unlike some publications that present that amount as fully secured or already executed, it is the estimated value for the integral long-term development of the project.
Port Cabo Rojo receives international recognition
One of the most visible advances is Port Cabo Rojo, whose second phase was inaugurated in October 2024.
The terminal can receive two Oasis-class ships simultaneously and handle up to 15,000 visitors. In November 2025 it reached a new milestone by receiving two cruise ships on the same day, with 4,679 passengers.
In August 2026, Port Cabo Rojo was selected as a finalist in the "Port of the Year" category of the Seatrade Cruise Awards 2026, one of the most important recognitions in the international cruise industry.
The Dominican terminal competes with the Portsmouth International Port in the United Kingdom and the Port of Skjolden in Norway.
This nomination strengthens the projection of Pedernales as an international destination and places Cabo Rojo on the radar of major cruise lines, tour operators and investors.
A new stage with private participation
Another decisive event of 2026 was the incorporation of the Cabo Rojo Consortium as strategic partner responsible for the operational management of the project.
The consortium is led by Grupo Puntacana, AFI Reservas and AFI Popular. Its entry marks the beginning of a new stage based on collaboration between the State and private capital.
What it means for real estate investors
Large tourism transformations tend to create opportunities beyond the hotel sector: demand for land, housing for workers, vacation rentals, retail and services usually follows.
Pedernales is at an earlier stage than consolidated destinations such as Punta Cana, which implies both higher potential and the need for careful evaluation of each opportunity: location, infrastructure timing, legal status of land and realistic demand.
For investors watching the Dominican south, Cabo Rojo is the clearest signal so far that a new tourism corridor is taking shape.
